Hiemalis varieties are believed to be descended from the Japanese original, known only from gardens and which blooms in winter - early spring. It is thought to be possibly a hybrid of C. sasanqua, introduced to Japan centuries ago from China. The varieties tend to flower slightly later than C. sasanqua varieties, and several are spreading or prostrate growers.
